3,000 new computer viruses recorded in April

VietNamNet Bridge - Nearly 3,000 new computer virus variety attacked Vietnamese PCs and laptops this month, said national anti-virus center Bkis Security on April 27. 

Of the 2,884 viruses found in Vietnam, 2,878 came from foreign countries, said Bkis. The viruses attacked nearly four million computers in Vietnam.

The W32.AutorunUSB.Worm virus was the most rampant, attacking over 202,000 computers.

Bkis said the loophole in PDF files downloaded form the internet had yet to be fixed since it was announced in March.

Opening PDF files downloaded from the internet with Adobe Acrobat Reader is thus risky. When opening a PDF file downloaded form the internet, users will be asked to save automatically on the Desktop or in My Documents. The file is in fact a section of a virus. Computer users will then be asked to open to the new file. If they follow the request, the computer will be infected by a virus.

Users should instead close the Save As box and quickly exit Acrobat Reader. Computer users should apply anti-virus software immediately.

Avoiding the unreal

Local reality shows tap into Vietnamese social mores of politeness and consensus, not crude and rude confrontation

In the US, the world of reality television is cutthroat and brutal.

In The Amazing Race, mean-spirited contestants can’t get enough of bickering, fighting and saying nasty things behind each others’ backs. In the dog-eat-dog, survivalof-the-fittest world of Survivor, greed is all that matters as competitors ruthlessly “kill off” the weaker contestants in a bid to further their own cause, like shipwrecked sailors resorting to murder and cannibalism to stay alive. In American Idol, Simon Cowell constantly mocks and insults the less-talented performers, often to tears, in front of audiences of millions.

Voyeuristic viewers seem to eat it all up: the arguments, the fights, the cheating, the conniving, the sex scandals and the embarrassing mishaps.

But in Vietnam, where propriety and saving face are some of the most important cultural values, back-stabbing and heartlessness are rare if not unheard of on the country’s most popular reality series.

Instead, another kind of reality show is grabbing local hearts, one that plays on the old Vietnamese beliefs that keep local families strong and makes sure members of the community support each other.

People helping people

Shows like Dream Houses, Vuot len chinh minh (Surpass yourself) and Nhu chua he co cuoc chia ly (As if we never parted) feature uplifting stories in which participants are encouraged to help each other and contribute positively to society.

In Vuot len chinh minh, in which poor people undertake various challenges such as sewing and hauling salt, the competition is only against the clock, and there are no losers. The show’s host Quyen Linh has even been known to let contestants win by adjusting the timer.

The contestants are selected from poor families in hard-up situations, and the prizes are not new cars or fancy vacations. Instead, the players have their debts cleared or are given money to start new small businesses.

The first half of the show is fun and games and the second half is always the players’ emotional true-to-life struggles of their battles against poverty. Audiences are attracted by the inspiration at hope provided at the end of each story, when the players are given their “prizes.”

The show, one of Vietnam’s most popular reality TV shows (garnering 35 percent of all viewership in its time slot), taps into themes at the heart of Vietnamese society.

The sentiments of the program, and local audience’s positive responses to it, hearken back to a traditional saying popular among Vietnamese young and old: La lanh dum la rach (literally “Healthy leaf helps the torn leaf”), which means that the well-off people should help those in need.

Dream Houses plays into similar cultural veins at the root of Vietnamese cultural norms.

In Dream Houses, the host of the show comes to visit families that don’t own homes to give them new houses. The stories of the people in need of homes are told in a documentary-style and then a sponsor provides them with a new home.

Again, the motifs of the show are influenced by a few old Vietnamese adages: “The only three things you need are a buffalo, a house and a wife,” and An cu lac nghiep, which means that one can only have a prosperous or stable life if one has a stable house.

Owning a house is traditionally a sign of success, and considered the first goal once one can find a job: settle down first, then build a career.

From that, people infer that without a house, one can be seen as insecure, possibly thus not reliable.

Thus, home ownership is valued above everything except for family itself. Many people’s number one goal and aspiration is to own their own house, so people really connect with a show in which giving a family a home is the central theme.

Dream Houses also plays into the philosophy of La lanh dum la rach as the less-privileged are given what they need by the “healthy leaves.”

Learning to dance

Buoc nhay hoan vu, Vietnam’s version of Dancing with the Stars has also become a big hit.

Nguyen Quang Minh, general director of Cat Tien Sa, a TV production company that owns the show, said the program resonated with Vietnamese audiences because it wasn’t just an exhibit of flashy commercialism materialism, as most celebrity-based shows are.

“It has high ratings now because it has changed people’s view of celebrities, winning their hearts by using their weaknesses, instead of their gifts, to entertain artists.”

He said viewers found it inspiring to watch successful people try something at which they were not experts, and eventually learn and succeed.

The ties that bind

Then there’s “As if we never parted,” which plays into the traditional family values that Vietnamese still take seriously.

In the show, people identify long lost relatives they haven’t see in decades and the series’ producers and investigators scour both Vietnam and foreign countries for the person in order to stage a tear-jerking on-air reunion.

They’ve connected everyone from poor farmers, to estranged friends that once flew as fighter pilots together.

Straight shooting

This kind of wholesome entertainment is what sells in Vietnam. Shows that stray away from these set values often have to answer to an angry public. The blogosphere is always rife with comments criticizing public behavior and producers are conscious of this.

For example, a massage scene in the reality show Nhung chang trai, nhung co gai (Young men and young women) was cut from the broadcast for being to risqué.

There was a huge audience backlash against Vietnam Idol when the show first aired in 2007 as the judges were criticized for trying to hard to imitate Simon Cowell’s abrasive style and simply humiliating the contestants. Ever since, the criticism has been light, and constructive.

But what does the future hold for reality TV in Vietnam?

Dark days ahead?

Adventure Line Production (ALP) is producing a reality show based on Koh-Lanta, the French version of the famous American show “Survivor,” which will take place on Vietnam’s pristine and relatively untouched Con Dao Island.

Will the untouched atmosphere of the remote locale be spoiled by the kind of mean-spirited competition that fuels Survivor?

It looks like “reality” in Vietnam could be taking a turn for the worse…

Windows needs a built-in PDF viewer, argues researcher

Microsoft should add a basic PDF viewer to Windows to help protect users from the spike in attacks exploiting bugs in Adobe's Reader, a security researcher said Friday.

"Apple does this with its Preview [application], and Microsoft should, too," said Sean Sullivan, a security advisor with Finnish antivirus vendor F-Secure's North American operation. "I just want to view and read PDFs. I don't want to listen to them or watch them or launch executables from them or run JavaScript," Sullivan added, referring to several advanced features that Abobe's own PDF viewer, the for-free Reader, supports.

Some of those features, including Reader's support of JavaScript and the PDF specification's support for the /Launch function, have been exploited by attackers in increasing numbers since 2008. According to tallies by antivirus vendor McAfee, PDF exploits were up more than eight times in 2009 compared to the year before, a trend that has continued into 2010.

And the /Launch function, which allows PDF documents to run embedded executable files, is currently being exploited by attackers in a widespread malicious message campaign that tries to trick users into opening a rigged PDF.

Sullivan spelled out his case in more detail in a post to the F-Secure security blog on Thursday. "Your customers are tired of the exploits and the complications that so many of today's PDF readers include," said Sullivan in a "Dear Microsoft" missive.

"They should write a really simplified viewer, one that just previews PDF," Sullivan added Friday in a telephone interview. "They don't even need to build it into the operating system. They can make it an optional download like they did the 'Save As PDF' add-in for Office."

Although Microsoft intended to add support for saving documents in the PDF file format to Office 2007, it was forced to backtrack when Adobe balked. Instead, Microsoft built a "Save as PDF" add-on that it made available free of charge. After Adobe submitted the PDF/A specification to the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) in 2008, Microsoft added "Save As PDF" support to its suite with the release of Office 2007 Service Pack 2 (SP2) a year ago. The same feature is available in Office 2010.

Office cannot open PDF documents without third-party software or add-ons, however. Windows 7's and Windows Vista's preview feature also won't display PDFs. Instead, Microsoft has promoted, with little success, a substitute for PDF dubbed XPS (XML Paper Specification); an XPS viewer is bundled with Windows 7, for example.

"The PDF specification has been completely royalty-free since 2006," said Sullivan, noting that Microsoft would not have to pay Adobe if it did craft a viewer of its own. "There's no reason why it can't create a native PDF viewer. It could even let users toggle it on and off, if it [were] worried about antitrust [issues]."

Several times, Sullivan compared his vision of a Windows PDF viewer to Preview, the application that Apple includes with Mac OS X. But Preview is not bug free: In March, researcher Charlie Miller said he'd found more than 60 PDF files on the Web that could be used to crash and likely exploit Preview.

Even so, Sullivan argued that Microsoft, or failing that, Adobe itself, should develop a stripped-down PDF viewer that omitted the functionality and features hackers have exploited. "I wish Adobe would create two different versions of Reader, one maybe 'Reader Lite' that's really just a viewer," he said.

Microsoft fixes bug in Producer software

IDG News Service - Microsoft has released a new version of its Producer software, fixing a critical security problem that plagued the product for several months.

Producer is a free add-on tool that helps users capture and add multimedia components to their PowerPoint presentations.

Last March, Microsoft warned of a critical security bug in the product, but it didn't release a new update. Instead, it said that Producer 2003 users should simply uninstall their software. On Monday, however, it posted an update, and is now recommending that "all customers using Producer 2003 upgrade to the new version," according to a blog post from the Microsoft Security Response Center.

Back in March, Microsoft said it was not updating Producer 2003 because it wasn't designed for automatic updates. "Based on our investigation, we determined that the best way to protect the vast majority of customers was to release an update addressing the components that shipped with Windows," Microsoft said in a blog post. "We recommend that customers either uninstall the application or apply an available Microsoft Fix It to disassociate the project file type from the application to add an extra layer of security."

The flaw, which has to do with the way Producer reads certain file formats, also affects Windows Movie Maker. But Microsoft issued a Movie Maker patch when it first warned of the issue in March. A similar product, Windows Live Movie Maker -- which runs on Vista and Windows 7 -- is not affected by the issue.

Microsoft doesn't know of anyone exploiting the bug in online attacks, but it's worried that hackers might be able to use it to install unauthorized software on victims' computers.

"Producer 2003 was a little-known product," said Andrew Storms, director of security operations with security vendor nCircle, via instant message. "What we have is the official replacement for the flawed product."

Computer technology has become a major part of people’s lives. This technology has its own special words. One example is the word mouse. A computer mouse is not a small animal that lives in buildings and open fields. It is a small device that you move around on a flat surface in front of a computer. The mouse moves the pointer, or cursor, on the computer screen.
Computer @@@ert Douglas Engelbart developed the idea for the mouse in the early nineteen sixties. The first computer mouse was a carved block of wood with two metal wheels. It was called a mouse because it had a tail at one end. The tail was the wire that connected it to the computer.
Using a computer takes some training. People who are @@@erts are sometimes called hackers. A hacker is usually a person who writes software programs in a special computer language. But the word hacker is also used to describe a person who tries to steal information from computer systems.
Another well known computer word is Google, spelled g-o-o-g-l-e. It is the name of a popular search engine for the Internet. People use the search engine to find information about almost any subject on the Internet. The people who started the company named it Google because in mathematics, googol, spelled g-o-o-g-o-l, is an extremely large number. It is the number one followed by one hundred zeros.
When you Google a subject, you can get a large amount of information about it. Some people like to Google their friends or themselves to see how many times their name appears on the Internet.
If you google someone, you might find that person’s name on a blog. A blog is the shortened name for a Web log. A blog is a personal Web page. It may contain stories, comments, pictures and links to other Web sites. Some people add information to their blogs every day. People who have blogs are called bloggers.
Blogs are not the same as spam. Spam is unwanted sales messages sent to your electronic mailbox. The name is based on a funny joke many years ago on a British television show, “Monty Python’s Flying Circus.”
Some friends are at an eating place that only serves a processed meat product from the United States called Spam. Every time the friends try to speak, another group of people starts singing the word Spam very loudly.
This interferes with the friends’ discussion – just as unwanted sales messages interfere with communication over the Internet.

English for IT students, some suggestions !

My english is not good, especially in writing and in speaking. But today I have some suggestions to all of you, who join this forum and interest this Box.

In this box, there are a lot of Topics content articles in the website by foreign authour. I think it's not necessary thing to do because of very, very much articles like these on Internet that we can find when enter any english interface website very easily.

However, there are some topics in this box content about some questions from forum's members posted and the answers are also english. I think this is a good way to practice for us to writing and especially in our field. When we graduate, some of us will work in a 100% foreign capital company, and we have to use english frequently. Why not we pratice from now, when we are at university.

Last but not least, there isn't any topic that posted and then everyone analyses the mistakes that the writer made. At the beginning of any Topic, we can see some familiar sentence:
Trích:
I'm not very good at English if don't want to say...very bad. So I think it will hard for me to join in this club.
or
Trích:
Hepl me!
I want to join this box to practice my English. So, if I make some mistakes in my composition , you help me correct them readily, please!
Now, I am using operation system Windown Xp. But ...
and etc.
But is there any reply that found mistake of the above article? Is there any reply that analyses the grammar or vocabullary,... mistake of above post? and the answer is not yet.
I think the moderators should be more active in their role. If they could, please read some post and show mistake and analyse the post if possible. This will help the author improve the writing skill.
